Description: Former members of the Possibilities,
Bob Spires and Jay Gonzalez are better known for their influence (Minus
5 covered "You Don't Mean It" on Conan in 2001) rather than
their talent for writing catchy, interesting music.
Metronome/Cheef is best described as rock's
version of OutKast's Speakerboxx/The Love Below, or more accurately Nutria's
answer to Big Star's classic Radio City/#1 Record; two distinct records
in one package with thematic similarities, but key differences.
Similarities include Nutria's complete
lack of pretentiousness when it comes to playing rock. Metronome is consistent
and relentless as the title suggests, with the thick buzz of bass and
guitars complemented by Gonzalez and Spires' harmonies. Even the album's
slower songs' drums keep the precision of a well-oiled machine. With Cheef,
Nutria strives for the perfect pop record. While they move away from Metronome's
occasional dissonance, it's still clear that consistently rocking is Nutria's
main priority. Credits:
